Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić stated that relations between Serbia and the United States have improved significantly under President Donald Trump. In an interview with Fox News Digital, Vučić highlighted that the Trump administration's focus on economic cooperation has positively influenced public perceptions in Serbia, where historical memories of the 1999 NATO bombing campaign linger. Vučić noted a stark contrast in how Serbs view Trump compared to previous U.S. administrations, with a suggested preference of 90% for Trump over Clinton.
Vučić recently invited Trump to visit Serbia, predicting a warm reception. He emphasized that the evolving relationship is increasingly focused on economic and technological cooperation, including discussions on energy infrastructure and investment opportunities. The Serbian president mentioned that Serbia aims to enhance its role as a regional economic hub while pursuing European Union membership.
He reflected on Serbia's economic growth, stating that the GDP has increased from 32 billion euros when he became prime minister to an expected 100 billion euros this year. Vučić also discussed the significance of U.S.-brokered economic agreements with Kosovo, which prioritize infrastructure and investment over political disputes.
Regarding Kosovo's independence, Vučić expressed that economic cooperation should precede political discussions. He maintained that Serbia can balance its relationships with both the East and West, citing pragmatic diplomacy as a guiding principle. Vučić reaffirmed Serbia's support for Israel and condemned rising antisemitism, asserting that such sentiments do not exist in Serbia under his leadership.
