Police in Belfast have declared a critical incident following violent protests that erupted on Tuesday night. The unrest occurred on a residential street near Shankill Road, where masked individuals approached a house and broke down its front door, reportedly claiming to be 'liberating' it. Witnesses expressed concern for the safety of individuals inside the property, including children. The situation escalated with the use of fireworks and bricks against the house, while a nearby car was set on fire.
The protests were reportedly triggered by the arrest of a Sudanese asylum seeker charged with attempted murder related to a knife attack. Social media posts from far-right figures, including Tommy Robinson, incited calls for protests. During the unrest, police observed the situation from a distance, concluding it was unsafe to intervene initially. By the time additional police units arrived, many protesters had dispersed.
In addition to the events in Belfast, protests occurred in other UK cities, including Southampton, where tensions flared following the sentencing of a man for murder. In Belfast, masked individuals also set bins on fire and blocked roads, leading to the suspension of bus services. Local officials, including Northern Ireland’s education minister, urged for peaceful demonstrations and condemned the violence, emphasizing the need for community dialogue on immigration issues.
