Representative Ro Khanna (D-CA), a potential candidate for the 2028 presidential election, addressed concerns regarding his endorsement of Graham Platner, the Democratic nominee for Senate in Maine. In an interview with the Washington Examiner, Khanna emphasized that voters would prioritize his congressional work, particularly his efforts to hold lawmakers accountable, including his involvement in the Jeffrey Epstein investigation.
Khanna stated, "I’ve endorsed so many candidates. I think what people look at is my leadership on the Epstein files, my leadership on stopping the war in Iran, my leadership in standing up to the billionaire class, in calling for attacks on billionaires, my leadership on my economic vision, call that new economic patriotism for how to create economic success across this country."
Khanna is one of several Democrats supporting Platner's campaign against incumbent Senator Susan Collins (R-ME). Following a recent incident involving Platner's treatment of an ex-girlfriend, Khanna acknowledged the situation's complexity. He described Platner's actions as "misogynistic, shameful, and wrong," but noted that they did not come as a surprise to many in Maine.
Khanna asserted that Platner has taken accountability for his actions while criticizing Collins for her voting record on national health insurance and tax breaks for billionaires. This year, Khanna gained attention for collaborating with Representative Thomas Massie (R-KY) on a petition that compelled the Department of Justice to release extensive files related to the Epstein case.
Khanna has reportedly hired Ron Klain, former President Joe Biden’s chief of staff, to assist him in preparation for a potential presidential campaign. If he runs, Khanna may represent the progressive wing of the party, similar to Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) in previous elections. However, he could face competition from other progressive figures, including Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY).
The outcome of the election in Maine may influence Khanna's prospects for 2028. Cayce Myers, a professor at Virginia Tech, noted the balance of risk and reward in Khanna's endorsement of Platner, emphasizing the strategic importance of winning the Senate seat. Myers also raised concerns about potential future developments that could affect Platner's candidacy.
Democrats are advocating for the importance of winning the Maine seat to gain control of the Senate, even if it requires supporting Platner. Despite controversies, Platner won the Democratic primary with 72% of the vote. Myers commented on the electorate's evolving tolerance for scandals in politics, particularly in the context of statewide elections.
Representative Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) remarked that it is too early to determine the impact of Khanna's association with Platner on his 2028 ambitions, praising Khanna for his consistency in positions. Jayapal also emphasized the need for vigilance in candidate screening due to Platner's previous controversies.
Representative Sydney Kamlager-Dove (D-CA) noted the importance of supporting Democratic candidates nationwide to regain control of Congress, while acknowledging the inherent flaws in all candidates. Kamlager-Dove called for equitable treatment of candidates from diverse backgrounds.
