The national average price for regular gas decreased to $4.129 per gallon on June 11, 2026, down from $4.151 the previous day and a drop of 12 cents compared to a week ago. A month ago, the average price was $4.52 per gallon, indicating a decrease of over 40 cents. This decline follows a record high of $4.564 on May 21, 2026, and reflects the volatility of gas prices influenced by geopolitical factors, particularly the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran.
Gas price analyst Patrick De Haan from GasBuddy noted that fluctuations in gas prices are likely to continue, stating, "Gas prices this summer could fall below the $4 mark; they could go above $5." He emphasized that the market has become accustomed to recent volatility, which may lead to a more stable response to future developments.
The current downward trend may be affected by recent military actions between the U.S. and Iran, which historically correlate with rising gas prices. As of now, 24 states report gas price averages below $4 per gallon, a significant change from May 20, when all states had averages at or above that threshold. Indiana currently has the lowest gas prices at $3.394 per gallon, while California has the highest at $5.809 per gallon.
