The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) received multiple warnings over the past eight months regarding addresses targeted during recent riots in Belfast. The Accountability Project Northern Ireland, a monitoring group, reported that anti-immigration activists were circulating a list of properties, particularly houses in multiple occupation (HMOs), that were at risk. This list was first noted in August 2025 and was sent to the PSNI in January 2026. The PSNI has acknowledged the distress caused to families by the sharing of these addresses.
The Newtownabbey area has experienced significant disorder, with reports of violence and property damage. John Blair, an assembly member for South Antrim, described the situation as a mob engaging in violence. The monitoring group highlighted that social media posts indicated a hostile environment towards HMOs, with calls for action against those perceived to be aiding asylum seekers and refugees.
Community groups have been assisting vulnerable families and minority ethnic students during this period of unrest. The monitoring group expressed frustration that their warnings were not acted upon, raising concerns about the escalation of violence. The PSNI has been contacted for further comment regarding the situation.
