House Oversight and Government Reform Committee ranking member Robert Garcia (D-CA) announced plans to seek interviews with senior administration officials concerning their management of files related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Garcia intends to request testimony from Vice President JD Vance, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, and FBI Director Kash Patel. However, as the minority party, Democrats do not have subpoena power, making these requests uncertain.
This request follows a New York Times report that highlighted Situation Room meetings last year regarding the Epstein case. Vance reportedly advocated for 'maximum transparency,' which included a suggestion for media personality Tucker Carlson to interview Ghislaine Maxwell.
Garcia criticized the administration's focus on protecting the President rather than seeking justice for survivors, referencing the New York Times report. According to the book 'Regime Change: Inside the Imperial Presidency of Donald Trump' by Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan, a Situation Room meeting was held on July 17, 2025, to discuss the fallout from the Epstein case, resulting in a call for the release of grand jury materials related to the case.
The committee has conducted 16 interviews in its investigation into Epstein, including interviews with former President Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and others. The committee has also released multiple batches of documents obtained from Epstein's estate as part of its investigation. Democrats have expressed concerns that the Justice Department has not fully complied with a law requiring the release of all documents related to Epstein.
