Jacob Reses, the chief of staff to Vice President JD Vance, will leave his position at the end of the summer, according to sources close to the vice president's office. Reses has held the role since Vance and President Donald Trump took office in January 2025. He informed Vance of his decision several months ago, following the news of his wife's pregnancy. His future job plans have not been disclosed.
In a statement, Vance expressed gratitude for Reses' support throughout his career, stating, "Jacob’s been by my side for my whole career in public life. I can’t imagine having been on this life-changing journey without him."
Reses has been a key figure in Vance's political journey, starting with Vance's successful Senate campaign in Ohio in 2022. Prior to his role in the vice president's office, he worked for Heritage Action and Senator Josh Hawley. Reses was also a prominent presence during Vance's campaign for vice president in 2024.
White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles praised Reses for his contributions, stating, "Jacob has been an important part of our White House leadership team and has served the Vice President with absolute distinction."
Cabinet members, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, also commended Reses for his intellect and leadership. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche highlighted Reses' hardworking nature, while Steve Witkoff, the special envoy to the Middle East, remarked on Reses' ability to command respect in negotiations.
It is suggested that Reses may return to the vice president's office in the future. Vance has maintained much of his original team from his Senate campaign, despite several recent staff changes, including the departure of his top lawyer, Sean Cooksey, in February.
