Secretary of State Marco Rubio addressed the issue of polarization in American society during an event celebrating the U.S. government's partnership with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Speaking at the White House before signing a memorandum of understanding with the UFC, Rubio noted that the country is increasingly divided, with people consuming news and engaging in social activities separately. He emphasized the need for more events that unite people through shared interests.
Rubio's comments were supported by a report from Statista, which indicated that political polarization in the U.S. is particularly strong, with many citizens identifying as either far-left or far-right. A Pew Research Center report also highlighted the deep divisions in American politics, identifying nine distinct political groups with varying priorities.
The UFC event, named UFC Freedom 250, is scheduled to take place on the White House lawn next week, coinciding with President Trump's 80th birthday. The administration has framed the event as a celebration of national unity amid societal divisions. Rubio referred to the UFC as the 'United Nations of fighting,' noting its ability to attract global talent and interest from various heads of state.
Additional events are planned in Washington, D.C., to commemorate the nation's 250th anniversary, including a free IndyCar race in August on the National Mall.
