Visa announced on June 11, 2026, that it has integrated its payment network with ChatGPT, allowing AI agents to shop and complete transactions on behalf of users. This integration enables AI agents to recommend products and make purchases at any merchant that accepts Visa, moving beyond previous limitations that confined such capabilities to a single retailer or a small group of merchants.
OpenAI previously attempted e-commerce with its Instant Checkout feature, which allowed ChatGPT to search for specific items but faced challenges with errors and low adoption due to fees. This new collaboration with Visa aims to enhance the shopping experience by allowing users to link their Visa cards to ChatGPT, facilitating transactions initiated by AI agents.
Jack Forestell, Visa's Chief Product and Strategy Officer, provided an example where a customer could instruct ChatGPT to find and purchase wireless headphones under $150. He noted that while consumers are becoming comfortable with AI shopping, transitioning to AI completing purchases requires a higher level of trust. Visa plans to implement safeguards such as spending limits and approval steps to address potential concerns regarding unauthorized transactions or overspending.
Visa and OpenAI did not disclose the financial terms of their collaboration, and Visa's feature will include mechanisms for handling disputes similar to traditional transactions. The integration comes as Visa's competitor, Mastercard, is also developing AI shopping features for its payment network.
