President Donald Trump has expressed support for a resolution being considered by House Republicans that aims to void the two impeachments he faced during his first term in office. The resolution, as reported by the Wall Street Journal, would symbolically erase Trump's impeachment record. Trump stated, 'It should be done because I did nothing wrong,' referring to the resolution.
In December 2019, the House approved articles of impeachment against Trump over allegations that he pressured Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden while seeking reelection. In January 2021, the House passed another article of impeachment related to his involvement in the January 6 Capitol riot, but the Senate did not convict him in either case.
Currently, the House is controlled by Republicans, who are looking to maintain their majority in the upcoming election cycle. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has indicated openness to the resolution, stating that discussions began about a month ago. He remarked, 'I think it makes a lot of sense the more the evidence comes out, the more we know they really were sham impeachments.'
Trump mentioned he would be 'honored' if the resolution passes. Additionally, retiring Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) previously introduced a similar resolution in April, which has since garnered 23 Republican co-sponsors, though the differences between the two resolutions remain unclear.
