Senator Bernie Sanders endorsed Tennessee state Representative Justin Pearson on Tuesday, who is running for Congress in a district affected by recent redistricting efforts. Pearson emerged as a front-runner in the Democratic primary after incumbent Rep. Steve Cohen withdrew from the race following changes to the district map that reduced his chances of reelection. Pearson's campaign focuses on issues such as wealth inequality and corporate influence, aiming to attract a diverse voter base, including disaffected Republicans.
Pearson stated that the new district map, which divides a majority-Black district into three separate areas, could hinder his campaign but believes it is unpopular among voters. He reported receiving support from some Republicans who plan to vote for him. Pearson has raised nearly $2 million for his campaign, primarily from small donations.
In addition to Sanders, Pearson has received endorsements from various progressive organizations and politicians. He advocates for federal legislation to support working people and improve public safety, emphasizing the need for national policies on issues like minimum wage and gun safety. Pearson, along with other Democratic candidates, previously filed a lawsuit challenging the new congressional map but later withdrew it, citing a hostile political environment for their cause.
