The FBI reported that it thwarted a planned drone attack targeting the UFC Freedom 250 event at the White House, which was attended by President Donald Trump and other officials. The plot was uncovered on June 10, just days before the event, leading to the arrest of five individuals accused of planning the attack, which aimed at 'capitalist elites' and politicians associated with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).
FBI Director Kash Patel stated that the rapid response from the FBI and the Department of Justice resulted in the apprehension of multiple suspects and the prevention of the alleged attack. At least 12 FBI offices participated in the operation, which began with the first arrest on June 10. Investigators found discussions on a suspect's phone involving at least 23 users on Signal regarding the attack.
The alleged plan involved using explosive drones to target buildings near the event, causing mass evacuations and directing crowds towards a sniper team. A subsequent assault on the White House was also reportedly planned.
The event featured heightened security measures, including multiple checkpoints and road closures, with costs for additional policing around the White House reaching approximately $12 million, funded by UFC CEO Dana White. After the event, White praised law enforcement for their effective security management.
