At the G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains, France, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his intention to focus on the Russia-Ukraine war after addressing the Iran crisis. Trump stated, "Twenty-five thousand people a month are dying, mostly soldiers. That shouldn’t happen," during a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron. European officials are concerned that Trump’s renewed focus could disrupt their strategy of pressuring Russia and supporting Ukraine.
The issue of Ukraine will be discussed in a working session with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who emphasized the importance of U.S. involvement in achieving peace. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen highlighted the need for increased financial support for Ukraine, noting that the EU has committed €90 billion to cover two-thirds of Ukraine's financial needs for the upcoming years.
Trump's recent communication with both Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin has raised concerns among European leaders about the potential sidelining of their role in negotiations. Von der Leyen announced additional EU grants and loans to bolster Ukraine's defense, while European Council President António Costa stressed the importance of G7 unity in resolving the conflict. The EU is also preparing a new package of sanctions against Russia, although U.S. support for further financial aid to Ukraine remains uncertain.
