President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he plans to send the text of the Iran ceasefire deal to Congress for review prior to a potential signing ceremony later this week. Trump made this statement while in Evian, France, addressing criticism from some Republicans, including Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC), regarding the 60-day memorandum of understanding.
Trump indicated that he would consider the suggestion to allow Congress to approve the deal, stating, "I never thought of it, but I would. I wouldn’t mind." He added, "What I’d like to do is send it to Congress, saying ‘You shouldn’t approve it,’ and I’ll get it approved."
He further commented on the political implications, saying, "I like the idea. I mean, who wouldn’t approve it? Let’s let them have a nuclear weapon. The ‘Dumocrats’ will say they should have a nuclear weapon. They’ll go crazy. I like the idea. Send it to Congress, please."
Trump administration officials, including Vice President JD Vance, are planning a signing ceremony with Iranian officials in Geneva, Switzerland, on Friday, although the president, vice president, and Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf have already virtually signed the document.
