Brendan Sorsby, a quarterback from Texas Tech University, plans to withdraw his lawsuit against the NCAA and declare for the NFL's supplemental draft, foregoing his final year of college eligibility. This decision comes shortly after a Texas state court granted him an injunction allowing him to play for Texas Tech in the 2026-2027 season. Following the court ruling on June 8, 2026, the University of Georgia and the University of Nebraska announced they would boycott games against Texas Tech until the NCAA made a decision. The Big 12 Conference also filed a lawsuit against Texas Tech to relieve the injunction granted to Sorsby.
Sorsby transferred to Texas Tech after two years at the University of Cincinnati and two seasons at Indiana University. During his time at Indiana, he reportedly wagered at least $90,000, including bets on his own team, leading to his ban from NCAA eligibility. After regaining eligibility through legal action, he has now opted to pursue a career in the NFL.
In a social media post, Sorsby expressed gratitude for the support he has received and stated his commitment to improving both on and off the field. He will apply for the NFL's supplemental draft, which allows teams to bid on players who were unable to declare for the regular draft due to eligibility issues. Historically, only three players have been selected in the supplemental draft in the last 15 years. The decision on whether any NFL team will select Sorsby remains uncertain due to his past gambling issues.
