Representative Nancy Mace, a Republican from South Carolina, is advocating for a constitutional amendment that would prohibit foreign-born individuals from serving in Congress and the federal judiciary. During an appearance on 'Saturday in America,' Mace explained that her legislation aims to ensure that members of Congress and judges are natural-born citizens, similar to the requirement for the presidency. Mace's joint resolution would apply to members of the House, Senate, and federal judiciary, as well as other Senate-confirmed appointees.
Mace specifically criticized foreign-born lawmakers, including Representative Ilhan Omar from Minnesota, suggesting that they may have loyalties to other nations. She expressed support for the retroactive removal of naturalized citizens from Congress, stating, "They are influenced, I believe, by their foreign allegiance to other countries, and we want to make sure that America is run by American patriots."
When asked if the legislation would affect sitting lawmakers, Mace indicated she would support making it retroactive. Her proposal could potentially impact several current members of Congress from both parties. Mace highlighted Omar, along with Representatives Shri Thanedar and Pramila Jayapal, as examples of individuals she believes should not serve due to their foreign origins.
In response to Mace's proposal, Omar stated, "Good luck to her," while Jayapal condemned the amendment as xenophobic and narrow-minded, arguing that it undermines the contributions of immigrants to the country. The proposed amendment would require a two-thirds majority in both chambers of Congress and ratification by three-fourths of U.S. states to become law. Fox News Digital reached out to Omar's office for comment but did not receive an immediate response.
