The Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) is being urged to withdraw from an academic retreat organized by the University at Buffalo's Center for K-12 Black History and Racial Literacy Education. The North American Values Institute (NAVI) has expressed concerns regarding Ismael Jimenez, who is set to co-facilitate a workshop at the event. Jimenez, the Director of Social Studies Curriculum for the School District of Philadelphia, has faced criticism for his curriculum initiatives and comments related to Israel.
NAVI's letter states that the Smithsonian should not support an event associated with an educator whose record raises questions about the legitimacy of Black history education being used for political purposes. Jimenez responded by stating that he sees the retreat as a chance to engage with other educators and emphasized the importance of humility in education.
NAVI has previously criticized Jimenez's curriculum for its perceived political bias, claiming it promotes activism over critical inquiry. The organization also highlighted Jimenez's public comments about Israel, including calling it a 'terrorist state.' Concerns about his involvement with activist organizations and his role in shaping K-12 curriculum were also noted. NAVI has called for the Smithsonian to withdraw its support for the retreat and to review its procedures regarding participation in third-party educator trainings.
