Vice President JD Vance postponed his trip to Switzerland on Thursday, which was scheduled to advance discussions regarding Iran. The postponement occurred shortly before his planned departure, with the White House citing logistical issues as the reason for the delay.
Vance was expected to sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that President Donald Trump signed in France on Wednesday, but those plans are now uncertain. A White House spokesperson stated, "As the Vice President said at his press conference, the plans for the upcoming technical talks have not been finalized, and the U.S. delegation has been prepared to depart at the first available opportunity. However, the logistics of these negotiations have never been simple or predictable."
Reporters anticipated Vance's presence at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland prior to his departure. Earlier in the day, Vance indicated that organizing the U.S.-Iran meeting might take additional time due to challenges faced by Iranian officials in leaving their country amid ongoing conflict. He mentioned that the trip could still occur over the weekend, but it remains unconfirmed.
The 14-point MOU initiated a 60-day period of discussions on Iran's nuclear program and other related issues, starting from the signing by Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Wednesday.
