President Donald Trump stated that he believes his power as commander in chief is unlimited following an agreement with Iran to end the war. In an interview with Axios, Trump was asked if he has learned about limits to his power, to which he replied, "There are no limits. None. I haven’t learned that lesson yet. I know there are, but there are no limits. We defeated them totally militarily."
The U.S.-Iran war is concluding as both sides signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) ahead of schedule. The signing was initially scheduled to take place in Switzerland. Trump signed the MOU at the Palace of Versailles in France, which allows the peace deal to take effect immediately. He later shared a photo of himself with French President Emmanuel Macron holding the signed document.
The 14-point document requires Iran to refrain from building a nuclear weapon and includes terms for both countries to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which has been effectively closed since late February, impacting global oil and gas prices. Trump had previously demanded unconditional surrender from Iran but stated that the agreement "probably is unconditional surrender."
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed the MOU after Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei granted permission, although Khamenei expressed skepticism about the agreement. It is uncertain whether the deal will be upheld, as War Secretary Pete Hegseth indicated that military operations regarding Iran could resume if necessary.
