Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) is aligning his campaign with President Donald Trump, aiming to energize Republican voters in New York's battleground district. At an event in Rockland County, Lawler expressed his strong working relationship with Trump, stating it was a factor in Trump's visit to the district. Lawler emphasized his commitment to the Hudson Valley, claiming he has delivered for the region in ways that previous representatives have not.
Political analysts note that while Lawler's association with Trump may energize some voters, it carries risks, particularly among swing voters who may be critical of Trump's economic policies. Erin Covey from the Cook Political Report remarked on Trump's unpopularity in the district, suggesting that campaigning with him could be a risky strategy.
Despite this, New York GOP strategist Jay Townsend defended Lawler's decision, suggesting he is a skilled political operative. Lawler highlighted his efforts to raise the State and Local Tax (SALT) cap during negotiations on a budget bill, claiming he threatened to oppose the bill if his demands were not met.
During the event, Trump praised Lawler, referring to him as 'Mr. SALT' and acknowledging his persistence in negotiations. Lawler's district, which has leaned Democratic in recent elections, is currently rated as a toss-up by the Cook Political Report. The outcome of the upcoming Democratic primary could significantly impact the general election.
The district has a substantial Jewish population, which previously supported Lawler, but concerns have been raised about Trump's policies affecting this community. Lawler's campaign has not publicly addressed the Jewish holiday of Shavuot during their recent events, focusing instead on affordability and Trump's proposed policies. National Republican Congressional Committee spokesperson Maureen O’Toole stated that Lawler and Trump have consistently supported the Jewish community and Israel, while critics argue that Trump's agenda has negatively impacted this demographic.
