Vice President JD Vance arrived in Switzerland early Sunday to participate in negotiations with Iran. The discussions are part of efforts by the Trump administration to establish a lasting agreement following a recently signed ceasefire. Vance arrived shortly before 6 a.m. local time and is expected to join White House envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner for the talks. Swiss officials confirmed that the Iranian delegation had arrived and was traveling to Bürgenstock for the discussions.
The negotiations were initially scheduled for Friday but were postponed by Switzerland's foreign ministry. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is also expected to participate in the talks. These negotiations follow a memorandum of understanding signed by Trump with Iran after the G7 summit, which established a 60-day ceasefire and outlined a framework for broader negotiations.
In a social media post, Trump indicated that the United States might impose tolls in the Strait of Hormuz if the negotiations do not yield a lasting agreement before the ceasefire expires. Before departing from Joint Base Andrews, Vance stated that a successful trip would involve establishing the framework for future negotiations. He expressed hope for progress on nuclear issues and the Lebanon ceasefire during the discussions.
Vance noted that conditions in Lebanon had improved despite ongoing clashes between Israel and Hezbollah, emphasizing the need to prevent further escalation and preserve the ceasefire. Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir are also expected to participate in technical-level discussions in Switzerland.
