District Attorney Jeanine Pirro stated on Sunday that vandalism to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, which has contributed to algal blooms, will result in serious charges. This announcement comes as efforts are underway to repair the pool, part of a beautification project initiated by former President Donald Trump. The pool was recently painted blue but has since experienced algal growth and paint deterioration.
In an interview with Fox News, Pirro emphasized that individuals involved in vandalizing the pool would face legal consequences, noting that citations have already been issued for vandalism. She indicated that if more harmful substances are introduced into the pool, more severe charges could be considered, although current vandalism is classified as a misdemeanor.
On Saturday, U.S. Park Police arrested David Hearn, a former Olympian, for allegedly vandalizing the pool. Hearn faces a misdemeanor charge of destruction of government property, claiming he only reached into the pool to examine a piece of the liner. Trump reported that the algae problem is largely resolved and that repairs to the pool's liner are expected to be completed within the week, ahead of the July Fourth celebrations.
