California Governor Gavin Newsom is publicly supporting President Joe Biden as the Democratic Party prepares for the 2028 presidential primary. Over the past 18 months, Newsom has defended Biden's legacy and policies, contrasting himself with other potential candidates who have distanced themselves from the president. Newsom has highlighted Biden's legislative achievements and character, stating, "I'll never turn my back on Joe Biden," and describing him as "one of the most successful presidents in the last century."
Last week, Newsom hosted Hunter Biden on his podcast, where Hunter suggested that he would campaign for Newsom. Newsom's support stands in contrast to other Democratic figures, including Vice President Kamala Harris, who has criticized Biden's decision to run for reelection at age 81. Despite Biden's overall unpopularity, he retains support among key Democratic voter demographics, including Black and Latino voters. A recent CNN poll indicated that 53% of Black Americans and 40% of Latinos view Biden positively, while only 23% of white Americans share that sentiment.
However, aligning with Biden carries risks for Newsom, especially given criticisms of the Biden administration and concerns about Biden's fitness for office following a challenging debate performance in June 2024. Newsom has defended Biden but acknowledged health issues that may affect his presidency.
