On June 22, 2026, a New York City Police Department officer shot a driver who was attempting to evade arrest in a stolen vehicle. The vehicle, a silver Kia Sportage, was reported stolen from the Bronx and was tracked by police through license plate readers. Officers located the vehicle on West Fordham Road and attempted to pull over the driver, ordering both the driver and passenger to exit the vehicle.
The driver allegedly reversed the car, striking multiple officers and an unmarked police vehicle before driving forward and hitting another officer. Aneudy Castillo, assistant chief and commanding officer of Patrol Borough Bronx North, stated that the driver reversed into an officer and an unmarked vehicle, then drove forward into a sergeant who was standing nearby, causing the sergeant to be thrown to the ground.
As the driver continued to attempt to flee, an officer on top of a nearby vehicle opened fire, striking the driver. The driver was transported to Saint Barnabas Hospital and is reported to be in stable condition. The officers involved in the incident were also taken to local hospitals and are in stable condition. Charges against the driver are pending.
The incident was recorded on body-worn camera footage and is currently under investigation. The driver had previously been arrested in February for a shooting incident and faced multiple felony charges, including attempted felony assault and criminal possession of a firearm.
