Superintendent Alberto Carvalho announced his resignation from the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) on Sunday, nearly four months after federal agents executed search warrants at his home and the district's headquarters. LAUSD staff confirmed they received a resignation letter from Carvalho. The district stated, "The Board remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring stability, continuity, and continued progress through strong leadership," emphasizing its focus on providing quality education and maintaining community trust.
In February, the FBI conducted searches at Carvalho's residence and the LAUSD headquarters, with additional reports indicating a related raid at a Florida property associated with him. The reasons for the search warrants remain unclear, as the FBI has not disclosed details due to the affidavit being sealed. Law enforcement sources indicated that the investigations in both states are connected to Carvalho, but specifics regarding any alleged wrongdoing have not been made public. The FBI and U.S. Attorney's Office have not commented on the investigation.
Prior to his role at LAUSD, Carvalho was the superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools. A source familiar with the investigation stated that it predates the Trump administration and involves allegations of kickbacks received by Carvalho while he was superintendent in Miami. However, this investigation is reportedly not linked to his tenure at LAUSD, and no culpability has been established.
Following the execution of the search warrants, Carvalho's attorneys issued a statement denying any misconduct, asserting that he has acted in the best interests of students and within legal boundaries. They expressed confidence that evidence would support Carvalho's actions and called for his reinstatement as superintendent.
Carvalho, who began a four-year contract worth $1.7 million earlier this year, has been on paid administrative leave during the investigation. Andrés Chait has been appointed as acting superintendent until a permanent replacement is determined.
