Details regarding his medical emergency emerged after he experienced breathing difficulties and other symptoms at a General Motors facility in Concord, North Carolina. A 911 call indicated that he was struggling to breathe, felt extremely hot, and was coughing up blood. He was subsequently transported to a hospital in the Charlotte area.
On Thursday morning, Richard Childress Racing announced that Busch would miss the Coca-Cola 600 due to a severe illness. Later that day, NASCAR confirmed his death, which shocked the racing community.
In a joint statement, NASCAR, Richard Childress Racing, and the Busch family expressed their sorrow, highlighting Busch's talent and contributions to the sport. Over his two-decade career, Busch won two Cup Series championships and recorded 234 victories across NASCAR’s three national series, making him one of the most successful drivers in the sport's history. He was known for his competitive spirit and was a mentor to young drivers, including his son, Brexton.
Busch is survived by his wife Samantha, their children Brexton and Lennix, his brother Kurt Busch, and other family members. NASCAR has confirmed that the Coca-Cola 600 will proceed as scheduled, with Austin Hill driving Busch's car.
