The primary elections in New York on Tuesday will evaluate Mayor Zohran Mamdani's influence with voters, six months into his tenure. Mamdani has endorsed candidates in three House races, including challenges against Democratic incumbents, which raises the stakes in contests for seats expected to remain Democratic in November.
Mamdani endorsed former New York City Comptroller Brad Lander against incumbent Rep. Dan Goldman in the 10th District. He also backed educator and immigrant rights activist Darializa Avila Chevalier against Rep. Adriano Espaillat in the 13th District. In the 7th District, where Rep. Nydia Velázquez is retiring, Mamdani supports Assemblywoman Claire Valdez, who is competing against Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, who is Velázquez’s preferred successor.
These races are part of a broader ideological struggle within the Democratic Party, with Mamdani's endorsements reflecting a rising influence of democratic socialists. In recent weeks, Mamdani's faction has gained national momentum, with other democratic socialists winning key primaries in major cities.
Mamdani's endorsement of Avila Chevalier has drawn criticism from some Latino and Jewish leaders due to her attendance at a pro-Palestinian rally following the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel. At a recent rally, Mamdani stated that the Democratic Party needs to change its approach to remain relevant, emphasizing the importance of the upcoming elections in shaping the party's future.
In addition to the New York primaries, former President Donald Trump faces challenges with his endorsements in other states, including a primary for governor in South Carolina, where he has endorsed multiple candidates to hedge his bets.
