Police reported that a body believed to be Oscar Sanchez-Munoz, a 22-year-old suspect in a series of highway shootings near Kansas City, was found by his family in the basement of a burned home. The family contacted authorities around 2 p.m. local time after discovering decomposing remains under debris. They had visited the property several times since it caught fire during a police standoff but only found the body after noticing a distinct odor while clearing debris.
Investigators, including federal partners and K-9 units, had previously searched the Independence, Missouri property without success. The basement was partially collapsed, flooded, and cluttered, complicating the search efforts.
This discovery likely concludes a multi-agency manhunt that began after Sanchez-Munoz allegedly fired at vehicles along Interstate 70, resulting in one death and several injuries, including an Uber driver. The FBI had offered a $25,000 reward for information leading to his capture, warning that he was considered armed and dangerous.
Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche had speculated that the suspect might be deceased in the home, although this could not be confirmed at the time. Investigators are currently assuming the deceased is Sanchez-Munoz, as the clothing matched what he wore during the shootings. A medical examiner will confirm the identity and cause of death. Authorities stated there is no ongoing threat to the community, and all surviving victims are expected to recover.
