A chemical tank at Nippon Dynawave Packaging Co.’s facility in Longview, Washington, imploded on Tuesday morning, resulting in one death and nine individuals reported missing, according to local authorities. The incident occurred around 7:15 a.m. at the pulp and paper mill located along the Columbia River.
Recovery operations are ongoing, and authorities have not yet released further details about the victims. A firefighter responding to the incident was among those injured, with some victims suffering from burns or inhalation injuries, varying in severity from critical to minor.
Cowlitz Fire and Rescue Chief Scott Goldstein stated in a news conference that responders have personal connections to the workers at the site, highlighting the emotional impact of the event. The tank that exploded contained approximately 80,000 gallons of a corrosive chemical known as "white liquor," primarily made up of sodium hydroxide and sodium sulfide. The facility employs around 1,000 people and produces materials for various products including tissues and cartons.
Battalion Chief Mike Gorsuch described the situation as a "mass casualty scene," with about 40 first responders and a regional hazmat team deployed to the scene. Washington lawmakers expressed their condolences to the Longview community, with Senator Maria Cantwell stating she was "devastated" by the reports of fatalities and thanking first responders for their efforts. Senator Patty Murray referred to the incident as an "absolute tragedy," extending her sympathies to those affected.
