Interim President Delcy Rodriguez reported at least 32 fatalities and 700 injuries, with the potential for a significantly higher death toll according to the United States Geological Survey. Rodriguez indicated that rescue efforts are ongoing and thanked international leaders for their support. Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado also expressed her condolences and support for the affected families.
Venezuela is located in a seismically active region, having experienced several major earthquakes in its history, including one in 1812 that resulted in approximately 30,000 deaths.
