President Donald Trump called on House Republicans to unify and allow legislation to proceed after a blockade disrupted leadership's plans. Following a meeting with House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), Trump urged Republicans to avoid voting down procedural rules, referencing Rep. Anna Paulina Luna's (R-FL) threats to lead a revolt until the Senate addressed the SAVE America Act, a key voter ID bill.
Trump stated on Truth Social, "Giving power to the Radical Left Dumocrats in the House to control what goes up for a Vote will make our outcomes worse, not better. No more grandstanding, please! They are the Dumocrats, and we can’t let them WIN!"
The GOP's blockade has hindered the advancement of significant legislative items, including two appropriations bills, and could jeopardize the passage of an annual defense bill if unresolved. Johnson noted the importance of moving forward, stating, "We’re in an era with small margins and small majorities, and we’ve got to get things moving."
Luna announced she filed an amendment to attach the voter ID bill to the National Defense Authorization Act, indicating this was necessary for her support on a procedural rule. The House Rules Committee is set to meet to discuss the amendments, but attaching Luna's amendment could risk the bill's passage in the Senate, where opposition is expected.
Tensions have escalated as House GOP hardliners press the Senate to act on the SAVE America Act. Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) criticized the Senate's inaction, stating, "The Senate sucks," and called for urgency in addressing the legislation. Trump has also indicated he would withhold support for a bipartisan housing bill until the Senate passes the voter ID legislation. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) has expressed doubts about the availability of votes for the bill.
