President Donald Trump called on House Republicans to unify and allow legislation to proceed after a GOP blockade disrupted leadership's agenda. Following a meeting with House Speaker Mike Johnson, Trump urged Republicans to refrain from voting down procedural rules. This call to action comes after Rep. Anna Paulina Luna announced plans to lead a revolt until the Senate addresses the SAVE America Act, which is the GOP's primary voter ID bill.
Trump stated on Truth Social, "Giving power to the Radical Left Dumocrats in the House to control what goes up for a Vote will make our outcomes worse, not better. No more grandstanding, please! They are the Dumocrats, and we can’t let them WIN!"
The GOP's internal conflicts have stalled key legislative items, including appropriations bills and a defense bill. Johnson emphasized the need for action, noting that the SAVE Act has previously passed in the House. Luna filed an amendment to attach the voter ID bill to the National Defense Authorization Act, which may complicate its passage in the Senate.
The ongoing dispute has intensified as House GOP hard-liners pressure the Senate to advance the SAVE America Act. Rep. Byron Donalds criticized the Senate's inaction during a press conference, stating, "The Senate sucks." He expressed frustration over the perceived laziness of Senate Republicans.
Trump has indicated he would withhold support for a bipartisan housing bill until the Senate acts on the voter ID legislation. Senate Majority Leader John Thune has suggested that the necessary votes may not be available even if the Senate attempts to move forward with the bill.
