A new report from Gallup and the Walton Family Foundation indicates that while AI tools are increasingly being integrated into classrooms, many teachers are not receiving formal guidance on how to use these technologies effectively. Education experts suggest that AI should enhance classroom experiences and reduce workloads for teachers, rather than complicate them.
According to the report, a significant number of K-12 teachers report using AI, yet approximately 80% have not received formal training on its application in their work. Specifically, 71% of teachers indicated they received no guidance on using AI for feedback or coaching, while 69% reported a lack of support for one-on-one instruction or tutoring. Additionally, many teachers stated they did not receive guidance on using AI for analyzing student learning patterns or grading assignments.
The report emphasizes that there is no universal approach to implementing AI in education, as the needs of teachers can vary widely. For instance, the use of AI by elementary school teachers may differ significantly from that of high school teachers. The report also notes that teachers in more affluent schools are more likely to receive guidance compared to those in higher-needs institutions.
Despite the growing pressure on educators to incorporate AI into their teaching, experts warn that without adequate support and policy frameworks, the integration of AI may not lead to improved educational outcomes. The report concludes that the focus should be on finding tools that enhance teaching quality rather than overwhelming educators with new technologies.
