Luigi Mangione's legal representatives have responded to reports suggesting that the UnitedHealthcare CEO assassination suspect is in negotiations for a federal plea deal. WNBC reported on June 26, 2026, that Mangione has been in contact with federal prosecutors regarding a potential plea agreement, which was reportedly close to being finalized but ultimately fell through.
Karen Friedman Agnifilo, Mangione's attorney, stated that the information attributed to anonymous sources reflects a troubling pattern by prosecutors to influence public opinion and compromise Mangione's right to a fair trial. Agnifilo emphasized that every defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty, including Mangione, who is facing two federal stalking charges resulting in death. Earlier, two other charges related to murder and a weapons charge were dismissed in 2026.
The U.S. attorney's office declined to comment on the matter. Mangione's legal team had previously indicated plans to pursue a psychiatric defense but later withdrew this strategy. Legal analyst Randolph Rice suggested that Mangione may have reconsidered this defense due to its potential implications for his upcoming federal trial in January 2027. Defense attorney James Leonard characterized the initial defense strategy as risky, noting that it could either lead to a significant win for the defense or result in a lengthy prison sentence for Mangione.
