Rep. John Larson, a Democrat from Connecticut, engaged in a discussion with Fox News correspondent Chad Pergram regarding the implications of Democratic Socialists of America-backed candidates winning primaries in New York. The conversation focused on whether these victories could threaten unity within the Democratic Party and complicate House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries' potential path to the speakership.
Larson defended the right of New York voters to choose their nominees and expressed confidence in Jeffries' ability to manage any ideological tensions within the House Democratic Caucus. He stated, "The voters of New York make up their own mind. We don't control voters of New York. In America, in a free Democratic-Republic, people get to choose their elective representatives."
When questioned about the potential for division caused by DSA-affiliated candidates, Larson reiterated his belief that Jeffries would successfully unite the caucus, citing his leadership skills. He stated, "Hakeem Jeffries is the greatest leader that we can have, because he will bring everybody together."
The discussion also touched on concerns about antisemitism and whether the party would distance itself from candidates with such views. Larson affirmed his opposition to antisemitism while maintaining that voters have the right to select their representatives. He concluded by addressing the DSA's controversial positions, stating, "The people of New York decide who their elected officials are. The people of Connecticut decide who their elected officials are."
