At the annual Road to Majority Conference in Washington, D.C., Christians from various denominations expressed strong support for the Republican Party. The event featured speeches from prominent Republican figures, including President Donald Trump, and was hosted by the Faith & Freedom Coalition, which aims to empower conservative political activists.
Attendee Otis Harris noted his lack of affiliation with a specific Christian denomination, emphasizing unity in Christ. He appreciated the message from Samuel Rodriguez, president of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference, who advocated for a repentant lifestyle and heart while supporting Republican values.
John Pudner, president of the Wisconsin Faith and Freedom Coalition, reflected on the historical reluctance of evangelicals to engage in politics, stating that many felt politics was a dirty business. Initially, there was skepticism about Trump’s alignment with Christian values, but Pudner observed a shift as Christians began to see the need for a more combative political approach. He quoted sentiments among Christians that they required a 'street fighter' in politics, acknowledging that while Trump may not embody traditional Christian virtues, he aligns with their political concerns.
Retired Navy veteran James Gallagher, identifying as Roman Catholic, expressed that the Republican Party aligns closely with Christian principles and noted a shift in the party's representation of working-class ideals. Gallagher believes that faith-driven individuals are becoming more politically active, which he sees as beneficial for all Americans.
The Road to Majority Conference is set to conclude on Saturday.
