The incident occurred in the Main Street area during celebrations for Cape Verde's advancement in the tournament following a 0-0 draw against Saudi Arabia. Brockton has the largest Cape Verdean population in the United States. Police received reports of gunfire shortly before midnight and located the injured individuals at the intersection of Main Street and Park Street. Cape Verde's advancement marks it as the smallest nation to reach the knockout round, with the team scheduled to play Argentina in Miami on July 3.
