Claire Valdez, the Democratic nominee for New York's 7th Congressional District, encountered online criticism after a podcast clip from May resurfaced following her primary victory. In the clip, Valdez expressed her views on abolishing TSA PreCheck and nationalizing the airline industry during an interview on 'Candidate Corner' of 'The Bitchuation Room' podcast. She stated, 'We need to abolish PreCheck... we need to, like, nationalize the airline industry.'
Following her comments, former Rep. Marc Molinaro criticized Valdez on social media, arguing that her proposals would complicate air travel. He stated, 'We’ve reached the point where NY socialist Democrats think making airport security worse & lines longer somehow makes America better.' Tré Easton, a former staffer for Sen. John Fetterman, also responded negatively to Valdez’s stance.
David J. Bier, director of immigration studies at the Cato Institute, warned that nationalizing the airline industry could lead to political misuse of the industry. He remarked, 'If we nationalize industries, it means putting Donald Trump in charge of those industries.'
Travel writer Gary Leff defended TSA PreCheck, arguing that it allows the Transportation Security Administration to allocate resources effectively. Valdez defended her proposals by highlighting issues such as airline profits and consumer rights, stating, 'The airline industry is making a lot of money and constantly undermining consumer rights.'
Valdez also noted the lack of a robust national rail network, which limits travel options across the country, emphasizing the need for better consumer protections in air travel. TSA describes PreCheck as a program that uses risk assessments to expedite screening for passengers. Valdez's campaign transportation platform advocates for shifting federal funding towards public transit, walking, and biking, without mentioning her previous comments on PreCheck or airline nationalization.
