Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) stated that Anthony Fauci will be held accountable by the American people as he continues his investigation into Fauci's role in the federal response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Paul, who chairs the Senate Homeland Security Committee, indicated that his investigation into the origins of COVID-19 is progressing, with access to more records and a subpoena for testimony aimed at uncovering answers regarding the pandemic and government-funded research.
In an appearance on Fox News, Paul noted that the Biden administration had previously obstructed access to documents, while the Trump administration had been cooperative in providing information. Central to Paul's investigation is the allegation that Fauci oversaw federal funding related to gain-of-function research, which studies how viruses might evolve.
The investigation is part of ongoing congressional inquiries into the origins of COVID-19, which has resulted in over 1.2 million deaths in the United States and more than 7 million globally, according to the World Health Organization.
Paul claimed that evidence suggests Fauci funded research that made viruses more lethal and infectious. Fauci has denied that U.S.-funded research caused COVID-19, asserting that proper oversight procedures were followed. Paul also alleged that early assessments regarding the virus's origin were influenced and that Fauci privately acknowledged that the virus likely did not originate in a Wuhan wet market.
Additionally, Paul raised concerns about a preemptive pardon issued by former President Joe Biden, questioning its legality. As the subpoena process continues, Paul emphasized that Fauci will ultimately need to respond to these allegations.
