Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey addressed members of the Somali community during a celebration for Somali Independence Day, expressing solidarity and acknowledging their contributions to the city. His remarks occurred as Minnesota faces scrutiny over fraud investigations, including a report from a Republican-led House Oversight Committee that claimed Governor Tim Walz's administration did not adequately respond to warnings about fraud in state social services programs. Frey stated, "Through the most difficult of times... we say that you're coming for all of us," emphasizing the importance of community support. He noted that Minnesota is home to one of the largest Somali communities in the U.S. and highlighted their resilience and cultural contributions. The House Oversight Committee report indicated that over 110 individuals have been charged in connection with various fraud schemes, with many being part of the Somali immigrant community. The report estimated that Minnesota lost approximately $300 million in federal child nutrition funds during the COVID-19 pandemic, a claim that Walz administration officials have disputed.
