PARIS, France — Israeli Ambassador to France, Joshua Zarka, stated that far-left leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon's rhetoric against Jews is reminiscent of Hitler's, amid a reported increase in antisemitic incidents in France. In 2025, France recorded 1,320 antisemitic acts, a significant rise from 436 incidents in 2022. Zarka attributed this surge to foreign influences from countries such as Iran, Russia, Turkey, and Qatar, as well as the exploitation of antisemitism by certain political actors in France, particularly the far-left party La France Insoumise (LFI).
Zarka noted that the Jewish community in France is facing challenges, with some individuals choosing to conceal their identities due to safety concerns. He highlighted recent incidents of antisemitism, including assaults and vandalism targeting Jewish individuals and properties. Rabbi Elie Lemmel shared his experiences of increased aggression since the conflict on October 7, emphasizing the need for vigilance within the community.
Yonathan Arfi, president of the Conseil Représentatif des Institutions juives de France (CRIF), mentioned that while there is a rise in antisemitism leading to precautionary behaviors, Jewish life remains vibrant. He urged the community to continue living openly and proudly despite the challenges. The Israeli ambassador acknowledged the French government's commitment to combating antisemitism but urged caution for Israelis traveling to other European countries.
French President Emmanuel Macron has also condemned the rise of antisemitism in the country, describing it as a pervasive issue that has infiltrated various aspects of society. He criticized both Islamist and far-left antisemitism, stating that it often disguises itself as anti-Zionism. Zarka noted that there are tensions in bilateral relations, particularly regarding military support during conflicts involving Israel.
