The national average price for a gallon of regular gas has decreased to $3.86 as of Monday, according to the American Automobile Association (AAA). This marks a decline of nearly seven cents from the previous week and is the lowest price since March 19, when it was $3.88 per gallon. Gas prices have been on a downward trend since May 21, following a record high of $4.564 per gallon earlier in the year.
Despite the recent decreases, the pace of decline has slowed, with Monday's price remaining nearly the same as Sunday’s average. Over the past week, the average cost dropped by approximately seven cents, down from $3.929 a week ago. A month prior, the average price was $4.391, indicating a total decrease of 53 cents in the last 30 days.
Former President Donald Trump criticized oil companies last week for what he described as price gouging, suggesting that the national average should be around $2.26 per gallon. He expressed concerns during a press conference, stating that the current prices do not reflect the decrease in oil costs. Trump specifically mentioned major oil companies such as Exxon Mobil, Chevron, Shell, and BP as responsible for the inflated prices.
Gas prices have fluctuated significantly throughout 2026, with the national average reaching both a five-year low and a four-year high within months. Currently, Hawaii has the highest gas prices in the country at an average of $5.499 per gallon, while Indiana has the lowest at $3.216 per gallon. Other states with high prices include California at $5.455 and Washington at $5.189, whereas Texas and Oklahoma have lower averages of $3.298 and $3.351, respectively.
