President Donald Trump has expressed admiration for Ukraine's military achievements but has indicated that he will not resume extensive financial support to President Volodymyr Zelensky. At the recent G7 summit and upon returning to Washington, Trump acknowledged Ukraine's battlefield successes, contrasting his previous assertions about Ukraine's chances against Russia.
French President Emmanuel Macron noted that Trump's discussions with leaders at the G7 represented a significant change in his approach. Trump commented positively on Zelensky's leadership, stating, "He’s courageous, he’s got great equipment, but he’s got great men. He’s got fighters."
Despite these remarks, White House officials clarified that Trump's comments do not reflect a shift in U.S. policy regarding the war. An official stated, "The President has a humanitarian heart and wants this war settled so the senseless killing ends."
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov expressed concern over Trump's statements, questioning whether they indicated a U.S. strategy to strengthen Ukraine's military capabilities. Lavrov stated, "We want to understand what happened in Evian."
Ukraine has made significant advancements in its military technology, particularly in drone capabilities, and has signed defense agreements with several countries in the Middle East. Iryna Zabolotna from Brave1 reported that Ukraine's Ministry of Defense authorized 175 new military models for operational use in May, with a majority developed by local companies.
While the U.S. administration has not officially changed its policy, some officials believe Ukraine's military development aligns with Trump's expectations for NATO allies regarding defense spending. Trump is scheduled to attend a NATO leaders' summit in Turkey next month, where discussions on Ukraine and defense budgets are anticipated to be key topics.
