An American citizen has been arrested in Israel for allegedly spying on behalf of Iranian intelligence, according to Israeli authorities. The suspect, a U.S. citizen in his 20s, was taken into custody on June 9, 2026, following a joint operation by the Israel Police and the Shin Bet. The arrest was prompted by intelligence alerts raised by international security organizations.
The suspect's activities reportedly involved photographing and documenting sensitive sites across Israel in exchange for payments ranging from tens to hundreds of dollars per task. The investigation, conducted under a strict gag order by the Jerusalem District Police’s Central Unit, revealed that the suspect had maintained active contact with Iranian intelligence handlers over the preceding months. A Jerusalem court has extended his detention multiple times to facilitate the investigation.
With the investigation now complete, prosecutors have filed a formal statement against the suspect, paving the way for a formal indictment in the coming days. Prosecutors are expected to request that he remain in custody until the legal proceedings are concluded. Chief Inspector Amichai Panta of the Jerusalem District’s central unit noted that several defendants suspected of espionage have been exposed recently, some allegedly acting during wartime.
This arrest reflects a growing trend of espionage linked to Tehran. According to a 2025 Shin Bet annual summary, security forces disrupted 120 Iranian intelligence operations and indicted 25 individuals on related charges, with many being contacted through social media and compensated for various spying tasks.
