Manny Rutinel, a Democratic candidate for Congress in Colorado's 8th Congressional District, won a primary race on Tuesday evening, securing his party's nomination to challenge incumbent Rep. Gabe Evans, a Republican. Rutinel, who is a member of the Colorado House of Representatives, is entering a competitive race that could influence the balance of power in Washington, D.C., where Republicans currently hold a majority in the House, Senate, and the presidency. In the 2024 election, Evans won the seat by a margin of 0.8%.
Rutinel has positioned himself as a candidate focused on protecting government programs and advocating for minority rights. His campaign priorities include safeguarding Social Security and Medicaid, expanding tax credits, reversing immigration policies from the Trump administration, and addressing housing affordability. In a campaign video, Rutinel stated, "I was raised on Medicaid. It's deeply personal for me and now Donald Trump and Gabe Evans are trying to destroy it to give tax breaks to their billionaire buddies."
Rutinel's platform includes proposals for higher taxes on wealthy individuals and universal healthcare, which have led Republicans to draw comparisons between him and New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani. A spokesperson for Evans remarked that while such policies may resonate in New York, they are not appealing to Colorado voters. The Congressional Leadership Fund, a Republican fundraising group, has also highlighted a video of a Mamdani campaign rally, suggesting that Rutinel aligns with Mamdani's political stance. Rutinel will face Evans in the general election scheduled for November 3.
