Approximately 1,000 days after the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, Israel has demonstrated military dominance in the Middle East but faces increased global isolation, according to reports. The attack resulted in the deaths of around 1,200 Israelis and the abduction of 250 individuals to Gaza. Following the attack, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his Cabinet responded with military action, deeming the threats along their borders intolerable.
In the subsequent two and a half years, Israel, supported by the United States, has engaged in military operations against Iran and its proxy forces across several countries, including Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Yemen. While Israel has reportedly weakened the capabilities of groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah, it has also become politically isolated due to its military actions.
Ned Price, former spokesperson for the U.S. State Department, stated that Israel had the potential to emerge stronger after the attack but sacrificed this opportunity by prioritizing military strategies over diplomatic and humanitarian approaches. Despite the elimination of senior leaders from Hamas and Hezbollah, these groups remain operational, and allegations of genocide have been raised regarding Israel's actions in Gaza.
The conflict has also involved the Gulf States, which have faced attacks from Iran, complicating the regional dynamics. Price noted that while Israel has degraded its enemies, continued military campaigns have strained its international standing.
Former Israeli Ambassador to the U.S. Michael Oren acknowledged efforts to minimize civilian casualties but admitted that war crimes occurred. The U.S. war against Iran has stagnated, with no clear resolution in sight. Oren suggested that Israel should diversify its foreign policy and reduce reliance on U.S. military aid.
Vice President JD Vance emphasized the need for Israel to reconsider its approach to national security, highlighting the geopolitical costs of its military strategies. Netanyahu faces allegations of war crimes, and several countries have recognized Palestinian statehood, further isolating Israel on the international stage.
