Members of Congress convened on July 2, 2026, at Independence Hall in Philadelphia to mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This gathering coincided with the anniversary of the Second Continental Congress's vote in favor of American independence in 1776.
Representative Brendan Boyle (D-PA), who represents Philadelphia, organized the event and emphasized the importance of unity even amid national divisions. He stated, "Many of the voices raised in doubt centuries ago served to strengthen and improve the decisions finally made. The American adventure is a continuing process. As one milestone is passed, another is sighted."
Attendees included House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), and Rep. Robert Aderholt (R-AL). Boyle remarked on the ongoing struggle for freedom since the Declaration was signed, stating, "The work that began here in Philadelphia did not end here in 1776."
Governor Josh Shapiro (D-PA) also spoke at the event, highlighting Philadelphia's significance as the nation's birthplace and expressing gratitude to Congress members for their efforts. He noted that despite challenges, the spirit of America has persisted over the past 250 years, urging Congress to draw inspiration from the founders' example.
