Raleigh, North Carolina Mayor Janet Cowell is considering implementing a curfew for minors after a series of violent incidents during the Independence Day weekend, which involved multiple shootings and large gatherings of teenagers. Cowell stated to WRAL News that the city is not exempt from the youth violence seen nationwide and emphasized the need for community discussions to address the root causes. The proposed curfew would apply to individuals aged 17 and under, similar to measures taken in other North Carolina cities. The City Council is expected to discuss various approaches to address the issue in an upcoming meeting.
During the holiday weekend, approximately 5,000 teenagers gathered in Brier Creek and another 5,000 in Glenwood South, with many attendees coming from outside the city. Police responded to reports of fights and shootings, with one adult injured by gunfire and another by shattered glass. A juvenile was detained but is not believed to have been involved in the shootings. Investigations into the incidents are ongoing. Cowell described the teen takeovers as a concerning national trend and called for community engagement to prevent future occurrences. Local businesses, such as Milk Bar, expressed concerns over safety and the impact of the violence on their operations.
