Support for Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner has decreased among Democrats following a rape allegation made by Jenny Racicot, a former girlfriend. Representative Ro Khanna of California rescinded his endorsement and called for Platner to suspend his campaign after a report by Politico detailed the allegation, which Platner has denied. Khanna stated that sexual assault is a 'red line' and emphasized the seriousness of the allegations.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand also issued a joint statement urging Platner to leave the race, indicating that the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee would not invest in Maine if he continued his candidacy. Both Schumer and Gillibrand had previously supported Governor Janet Mills in the primary but did not endorse Platner until he won the nomination.
Khanna had previously supported Platner's campaign despite ongoing controversies, including accusations of abuse from another former girlfriend and scrutiny over his past conduct. Following the latest allegation, other prominent supporters, including Senator Martin Heinrich and Senator Ruben Gallego, also withdrew their endorsements. Senator Mark Kelly called for Platner to suspend his campaign, stating that character and accountability are important regardless of party affiliation. The Platner campaign has been contacted for comment.
