Former Georgia Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene expressed her support for Thomas Massie, the outgoing Representative from Kentucky, to run for Senator Mitch McConnell's seat. Greene made these comments following McConnell's recent hospitalization due to a medical emergency, which she believes the Republican Party has not addressed adequately. In an interview, Greene stated, "Thomas Massie would make a great senator," and criticized the Republican establishment for supporting Massie's primary opponent, Ed Gallrein, who was also endorsed by former President Donald Trump. Greene accused the establishment of 'stealing' Massie's seat and claimed that billionaire donors were involved in the effort against him.
Massie, who lost the Republican primary two months ago, has not confirmed his intentions regarding a Senate run but is open to running for his House seat again in 2028. Greene noted that she has not discussed a potential Senate run with Massie. McConnell has been hospitalized since June 14, and while his office reports he is receiving "excellent care" and is improving, the specifics of his condition remain undisclosed. Greene criticized the Republican Party for their silence on McConnell's health and made unverified claims about his condition. She also criticized McConnell's wife, Elaine Chao, for traveling to China shortly after McConnell's hospitalization, suggesting it was inappropriate given his health status.
McConnell, who has faced various health issues in recent years, is not seeking reelection and is set to retire in January 2027. If he cannot complete his term, a special election will be held to fill the vacancy, as per Kentucky law.
